Singapore Chronicles is a series launched in conjunction with the Institute of Policy Studies and Straits Times to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s Independence, This 50-volume series seeks to record, explain and offer insights into what makes Singapore, Singapore, by providing analysis as well as historical accounts on a variety of uniquely Singaporean topics.
'Singapore Chronicles - Indians' seeks to unpack complex questions of identity in Singapore’s Indian community.Though a small minority within the Singapore society, the Indian community displays deep diversity within its own fabric. Discussing the story of Singapore Indians within the larger narrative of Indian displacement and placement globally, it goes on to contextualise the Indian presence in Malaya and Singapore historically. The author maps the socio-economic, religious and linguistic complexities of the community, which is further complicated by ongoing new arrivals from India. The dynamics of the Indian community is as rich as it is complex.
